Software Freedom Conservancy

The Software Freedom Conservancy is an organization composed of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) projects. As a fiscal sponsor for FOSS projects, the Conservancy provides member projects with free financial and administrative services, but does not involve itself with technological and artistic decisions. By joining the Conservancy, member FOSS projects obtain the benefits of a formal legal structure while keeping themselves focused on software development. These benefits include, most notably, the ability to collect earmarked project donations and protection from personal liability for the developers of the project. Another benefit of joining the Conservancy is that projects can use it to hold assets, which are managed by the Conservancy on behalf of and at the direction of the project. The Conservancy is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization, so member projects can receive tax-deductible donations to the extent allowed by law. New England Center for Investigative Reporting
http://www.necir-bu.org/

Investigative reporting is one of democracy’s most important tools for providing citizens with the information they need to hold the powerful accountable and make informed decisions. In the New England region and elsewhere throughout the nation, serious investigative reporting is on a precipitous decline. Boston University’s College of Communication, which includes one of the premier journalism programs in the country, is responding to this crisis and challenge in our profession by creating The New England Center for Investigative Reporting at Boston University (NECIR-BU), the first non-profit, university-based investigative reporting collaborative in the country focused on local and regional issues. The primary goals of NECIR-BU are: to produce high-quality, high-impact investigative reports that will be published and aired by multiple media partners on multiple platforms, to train the next generation of investigative reporters including students at Boston University and inner-city high schools, to serve as a platform for experimenting with how to effectively deliver long-form investigative content to a digital audience and to be a model for non-profit, multi-media, investigative journalism that could be duplicated nationwide. Initially, NECIR-BU’s reporting will reach millions of people in New England through reports appearing in print, on the web, radio and TV. This will be accomplished through partnerships already in place with various news outlets including boston.com, The Boston Globe, New England Cable News, and WBUR (NPR). In addition, NECIR-BU is partnering with New England Ethnic News, a Web-based ethnic news service, to provide our reporting to various ethnic media outlets. In future years, relationships beyond the metro area will allow us to reach an even larger audience. This has been added to Business Intelligence Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

Do you know your online rights? Have you received a letter asking you to remove information from a Web site or to stop engaging in an activity? Are you concerned about liability for information that someone else posted to your online forum? If so, this site is for you. Chilling Effects aims to help you understand the protections that the First Amendment and intellectual property laws give to your online activities. We are excited about the new opportunities the Internet offers individuals to express their views, parody politicians, celebrate their favorite movie stars, or criticize businesses. But we've noticed that not everyone feels the same way. Anecdotal evidence suggests that some individuals and corporations are using intellectual property and other laws to silence other online users. Chilling Effects encourages respect for intellectual property law, while frowning on its misuse to "chill" legitimate activity. The website offers background material and explanations of the law for people whose websites deal with topics such as Fan Fiction, Copyright, Domain Names and Trademarks, Anonymous Speech, and Defamation. Journal of Transatlantic Studies
http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/rjts

The Journal of Transatlantic Studies is multi- and inter-disciplinary, embracing: a) History, International Relations and Security Studies; b) Literature and Culture; c) Comparative Politics and Constitutionalism; d) Economic and Business History, Planning, and the Environment; and e) Area Studies, Transmission of Ideas and Migration. Standard issues attempt to strike a balance between the disciplines, though History, IR and Security Studies articles tend to predominate. Themed issues are also published. In the past, these have been on the impact of 9/11, on the Anglo-American relationship and on NATO's contemporary challenges. In the future, themed issues are planned on Canada and transatlantic relations, on perspectives from East and Central Europe from a literary and cultural perspective, and on the US Secretaries of State. Broadly speaking the journal will contain articles on the topic of Europe and its interactions with North, South, and Central America and the Caribbean. (The definition of Europe includes Russia and editorial policy would be suitably flexible about the African margin, depending on content and quality of submissions.) While the majority of articles will almost certainly be on North American relations with Europe, there will be an editorial policy of including at least one article per edition dealing with Spanish, or Portuguese or French speaking America (Dutch speaking America/Caribbean will be dealt with on a case by case basis). It is envisaged that most contributions will be about post 1945 or contemporary affairs, but articles covering any period of transatlantic relations would be welcomed providing that they have some contemporary resonance.

Virtual Worlds Research Discussion Group
http://vwresearchersgroup.pbwiki.com/

This is a series of meetings held in Second Life for discussing current and planned research projects, methods and methodology. The purpose of this wiki is to advertise upcoming talks and serve as a repository for transcripts, handouts, photos and videos. Anyone can read the wiki but to edit it you need will need to register . The meetings and wiki are organized by Greg Wadley at the University of Melbourne Uni, Deb McCormick at Monash University, and Sabine Lawless-Reljic of San Diego State University. Each meeting has a host, who presents their research and moderates discussion afterwards. Meetings last one hour. We usually schedule for each Tuesday at 2pm SLT, however the day and time can be chosen by the presenter. By moving these around we hope to cover all timezones. Media can be synchronous or asynchronous: each has its pros and cons. The advantages of assembling researchers in a seminar, vs individually reading papers, is real-time q'n'a, during which difficult points can be efficiently thrashed out. We also get to know each other better and build a global research community. The downside of synchronous meetings is scheduling and travel cost. Virtual worlds offer the pros of synchronicity, while minimizing the cons. Their meetings are informal and researchers can comfortably discuss work-in-progress without arduous preparation. And since it's in Second Life, people can attend anonymously. This has been added to Research Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog. Personal Genome Project (PGP)
http://www.personalgenomes.org/

In an unprecedented achievement, the Human Genome Project provided the first drafts of nearly complete human genome sequences in 2001 after more than a decade of effort by scientists worldwide. This information is now being used to advance medicine, human biology, and knowledge of human origins. They foresee a day when many individuals will want to get their own genome sequenced so that they may use this information to understand such things as their individual risk profiles for disease, their physical and biological characteristics, and their personal ancestries. To get to this point will require a critical mass of interested users, tools for obtaining and interpreting genome information, and supportive policy, research, and service communities. To catalyze these developments, they launched the Personal Genome Project (PGP). The PGP hopes to make personal genome sequencing more affordable, accessible, and useful for humankind. They aim to enroll 100,000 informed participants from the general public. Participants may volunteer to publicly share their DNA sequence and other personal information for research and education. Public Data Sets on AWS
http://aws.amazon.com/publicdatasets/

Public Data Sets on AWS provides a centralized repository of public data sets that can be seamlessly integrated into AWS cloud-based applications. AWS is hosting the public data sets at no charge for the community, and like all AWS services, users pay only for the compute and storage they use for their own applications. An initial list of data sets is already available, and more will be added soon. Previously, large data sets such as the mapping of the Human Genome and the US Census data required hours or days to locate, download, customize, and analyze. Now, anyone can access these data sets from their Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instances and start computing on the data within minutes. Users can also leverage the entire AWS ecosystem and easily collaborate with other AWS users. For example, users can produce or use prebuilt server images with tools and applications to analyze the data sets. By hosting this important and useful data with cost-efficient services such as Amazon EC2, AWS hopes to provide researchers across a variety of disciplines and industries with tools to enable more innovation, more quickly. In addition to the studies described above, the journal seeks three-part, coordinated submissions on a theme topic that deal in depth with (a) a review of the literature on a health problem that can be treated through the use of sound psychological or behavioral interventions; (b) the evidence from clinical field trials and applied research for the usefulness of the behavioral intervention; (c) an analysis of the policy implications of the therapy and means of introducing it into mainstream health practice. Wherever possible, the economic impact of new or evolving therapies should be included in the discussion. Each of these triptychs includes a careful review of the literature, practical suggestions to guide clinicians translating scientific knowledge into action, and a thoughtful discussion of desired changes in public policy, education, and insurance coverage.

Pew Internet - The Future of the Internet III Report
http://www.pewinternet.org/PPF/r/270/report_display.asp

A survey of internet leaders, activists and analysts shows they expect major tech advances as the phone becomes a primary device for online access, voice-recognition improves, artificial and virtual reality become more embedded in everyday life, and the architecture of the internet itself improves. They disagree about whether this will lead to more social tolerance, more forgiving human relations, or better home lives. Here are the key findings on the survey of experts by the Pew Internet & American Life Project that asked respondents to assess predictions about technology and its roles in the year 2020: a) The mobile device will be the primary connection tool to the internet for most people in the world in 2020; b) The transparency of people and organizations will increase, but that will not necessarily yield more personal integrity, social tolerance, or forgiveness; c) Voice recognition and touch user-interfaces with the internet will be more prevalent and accepted by 2020; d) Those working to enforce intellectual property law and copyright protection will remain in a continuing arms race, with the crackers who will find ways to copy and share content without payment; e) The divisions between personal time and work time and between physical and virtual reality will be further erased for everyone who is connected, and the results will be mixed in their impact on basic social relations; and f) Next-generation engineering of the network to improve the current internet architecture is more likely than an effort to rebuild the architecture from scratch. http://uclue.com/

Uclue is a professional, fast, and inexpensive research service. Post a question, and set the fee that you are willing to pay for an answer. The team of Uclue researchers will look it over, and one of them will likely 'lock' it, and get to work on an answer. If a researcher needs more information, or if the fee isn't quite right for the amount of work involved, the researcher will post a Clarification Request, and you will be notified by email that your input is being sought. When should I use Uclue? a) When you're too busy to research a topic yourself, b) When you don't know where to look, c) When you don't know enough about the research area in question, and d) When you need a credible, reliable, professional, high-quality answer to an important question. What sort of questions does Uclue answer? They can address an amazing variety of topics, cutting across almost all areas of business, academic and personal research needs. Their researchers have assisted clients with everything from wedding planning, to computer help, to providing legal and medical information, to PhD thesis research assistance, to uncovering family history.
