The data show monthly average temperature values for over 1,500 land stations. This technology is offered as an alternative to the well known search engines, in the belief that some users might prefer Words Close Together relevance ranking. Their method takes into account a simple fact about language. Ideas are expressed in words. When the words you search for are widely scattered -- maybe paragraphs apart -- they are not related to the idea you are after. It is worse than useless for a search engine to offer results in which the desired words are far apart; you are left to dig through irrelevant results to get at what you are after. Their technology filters out the words-far-apart results. Words Close Together presents only the results in which the words you ask for are close together, and it ranks the results so that the closer the words are together, the nearer a result is to the top of the list. This form of relevance ranking makes it very likely that the results at the top are meaningful and that they relate directly to the idea you have in mind. Over 14,000 examples of the first stage have been released so that people may experience this alternative search both on personal computers and over the Internet. In late 2008, many programs used to extract and format text were released publicly to the Open Source community. This means that Information Technology specialists around the world have full access to the preparation source code. This creates business opportunities for IT specialists, while exposing them to the power of research-quality search. A fundamental value underlying this project is respect for people -- a belief that it is okay to give the user control of the search experience, to be transparent about relevance ranking (the basis for the order in which results are presented), and to treat users as something more than eyeballs for ads. Words Close Together resolves a technical problem that for decades has troubled the computer industry's attempts to deal with whether words are near one another in text. The standard method has been to open up every search result that contains the desired words, then check how close the words are within that result. The standard method multiplied the search effort by a factor of tens of thousands or more. This problem has been creatively solved; such waste of user's time is no longer necessary. Proximity-based meaningful results can be delivered with extraordinary speed. This has been added to the tools section of Research Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog. Such information has spawned "real time search" as a powerful way to navigate the web. Real time search produces real time thoughts. While traditional search engines scour the web for relevant websites, real time search engines return the most recent conversations, comments, and links from internet users. There will continue to be a place for web based search engines such as Google and Yahoo, however real time search engines can offer something unique. Granted, if you want to buy sneakers online, Google will bring up several relevant websites which sell sneakers; however, if there is a hurricane in Miami, real time search can give you a window into what people in Miami are experiencing right now. Another example is a sporting event, if the Yankees lose a big game, a real time search engine will allow you to hear what the fans are saying about the Yankees at this given moment. For these reasons, real time search is here to stay as it offers a different type of user experience when compared to the major search engines. Sency was created to help you easily navigate the real time web. At any time, they allow you to see what is going on right now with any person, place, or subject matter. To use Sency, simply enter in whatever you want into the search box and click search, and you'll get real time results powered by real people. Also, at the bottom of the Sency home page, they have highlighted topics which may be of interest to you. You can look at what is going on right now, which shows you the hot topics of this given moment. You can also see the most popular topics of late. In addition, they also show you today's most popular links for any respective search query. A major goal of Sency is to continue to refine their results to bring you the most relevant information for a particular search query. They have implemented a spam filter to prevent irrelevant links from showing up in their engine. You can check out their search tips to learn more about the types of searches you can execute on their site. Websites that want to place real time results on their pages can do so through their feed for websites. The feed allows any website to display real time information for any subject matter. Web publishers can add this automatically updating information to their site via the free feed. They also offer a popular links feed for websites and blogs which display today's most popular links for a respective search term. Currently one can vote around once in the four years, on one party. What if we could vote for more than one party? What if we can 'retract' our vote before the 4 years if we are not happy with the party. What if we also like to vote on some specific persons and topics, or even solutions? What if we know some colleagues or friends who are more knowledgeable on a certain issue, perhaps we can delegate part of our vote on that topic to them? In Parademo, they focus on a simple solution: votes can be cut into smaller pieces by a voter, which can be placed not only on several parties, but also persons, issues and solutions. Although the ownership of the vote stays at the voter, the voter can decide to delegate some allowed part of the vote to another voter of which (s)he thinks has more expertise on that certain topic.
