Friday, December 31, 2010 Keeping Research Data Safe (KRDS) Website http://beagrie.com/krds.php This website has been set-up to support dissemination of information on the "Keeping Research Data Safe (KRDS)" cost/benefit studies, tools and methodologies that focus on these challenges and long-lived data. Keeping Research Data Safe has been developed in two major phases funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee. The first Keeping Research Data Safe study (KRDS1) completed in 2008 made a major contribution to the study of preservation costs by developing a cost model and indentifying cost variables for preserving research data in UK universities. That work has had considerable impact and received international interest. The second Keeping Research Data Safe project (KRDS2) completed in December 2009, built on this previous work and identified and analysed longitudinal data on preservation costs and benefits associated with long-lived data. These news, coming from newswires, newspapers, broadcast or social media, play a crucial role in shaping public opinion and informing the democratic process, as well as influencing markets and industry. Each item forming this enormous stream of information has been written, or chosen, by an editor, with the purpose of satisfying the information need of the intended audience (as well as a variety of other constraints). The contents of the news mediasphere form a dynamic and complex landscape, but not one without patterns and regularities. Social scientists have been interested in understanding them, as they both reflect and influence patterns in public opinion and society. This study has the purpose of automating the analysis of news content, by deploying state of the art methodologies from Artificial Intelligence, Data Mining and Web Technologies. We analyse millions of articles from hundreds of outlets and tens of languages, to understand what laws influence the contents of the media system. Through providing guidance and advice it benefits the whole of the UK sector resulting in the wider take-up and development of institutional repositories in HEIs. The aim of the project is to progress the vision of a deployed network of interoperable repositories for academic papers, learning materials and research data across the UK. Whilst fulfilling the business requirements of HEIs to manage their assets, showcase research outputs, and share learning materials, such a network of populated repositories is a major step forward in the provision of open access materials. Although some institutions are in the advanced stages of establishing well managed repositories the deployment of repositories is still patchy and many institutions do not have the expertise, resources or confidence to address the repository agenda without external encouragement and support. Consequently, whilst there are still many interesting areas for theoretical research, the principal aim of the RSP is to increase the pace of institutional adoption by providing practical assistance and advice based on available solutions, with an emphasis on operational issues to do with the installation, implementation and deployment of institutional repositories. The RSP has an active outreach programme of advice and information. This targets institutions that are yet to take the first step, as well as giving more advanced institutions guidance on embedding existing repositories within institutional strategies. In both instances the intention is to provide clear decision paths, succint guidance notes and hands-on support. In developing its services and support the project draws not only on the wide-ranging expertise resident in its carefully selected combination of consortium partners but also upon the substantial amount of additional expertise, research and infrastructure already available within the sector. Losing track of your projects' deadlines? Wasting time with manual time sheets? Uninvolved team members? Want to know which are the top used applications per project/per task/per team member? Or the daily productivty of your team on a particular project? How about the average focus of your team? Just the tip of the iceberg that is the multitude of problems you can face when conducting a freelancing activity or managing a team or even a larger company. As previously mentioned, TimeOP is the tool that detects this huge iceberg of problems and sees to its disappearing. All metaphors aside, TimeOP tracks your or your team members' activity and, based on this data, it will generate a number of comprehensive reports like: productivity reports, activity reports, involvement reports [per team member, per project, per task, per specified time period]. A true advantage from using TimeOP in a company is getting to know your employees thus being able to personalize your interactions with each and every one of them. For example, you find out from one productivity report that one certain member of your team is most productive and involved in its work during 10am and 3pm, after checking his email and RSS reader in the morning and before a certain podcast launches daily at 3:30pm, while listening to music in the background and reading a haiku every 30 minutes. You also notice that on most days, around 1pm he browses certain take out Chinese restaurants. Having all this information you could suggest an application that integrates both email and RSS reader, you can have some Chinese restaurants fliers pinned on your office cork board and basically make any changes you think would increase his productivity, based on the information you have. You can also create custom reports on teams in order to find this type of info but on a team/department level. The topic of each report is selected by the Bank's president three years in advance of the book's publication. As soon as the topic is announced, four major steps occur. * Research is initiated within the Bank's Development Economics Group (DEC), a Network (a group of Bank departments that research and work on several related sectors of development), or other appropriate units to strengthen links between the Bank's ongoing research program and the WDR. * A director is announced and the WDR team is recruited. A new team is established for each WDR. The team, which falls under the guidance of the Bank chief economist, is led by a senior Bank staff member and comprises staff and consultants from the Networks, Regional departments, World Bank Institute (WBI), and DEC's Research Group. The team members are seconded to work on the WDR for a 12-month period. * An internal partner group is identified for each WDR. Although the institutional home for each WDR is the DEC group, a partner group is identified early on (such as a thematic Network, WBI, or a Regional department) so that the knowledge created is further developed and actively applied after publication of the report. * A timetable is established for research, writing, review, consultations, presentation to the Board of Directors, editorial and production work, publication, and dissemination. posted by Marcus Zillman | 4:12 AM Frame Box - Easy Frame Sharing http://framebox.org/ Lightweight online tool for creating mockups. They bring together people who have great space and people who want to work in it. They don't set the terms, you do. Loosecubes does not own or rent any workspace. They started Loosecubes because they needed a place to work that made them feel more inspired, not less. Where you spend your working hours has a huge impact on your life. Working in a beautiful and functional space can make all the difference. At Loosecubes, they want to change the way people work. Their members need the flexibility to work at home sometimes and in an office sometimes. They want the freedom to travel anywhere in the world and not have to worry about finding an internet connection and some intelligent people. They don't think that Loosecubes hosts will participate just to make some extra money. They think they will participate because their members are people they want to get to know. They'll participate because they believe, like we do, that the only way to be truly independent work-wise is to have great workspace available when you need it - without paying an arm and a leg. Find a big space and invite your friends and colleagues to work together. Spend a month coworking or a few weeks in another country.
