Crime Maps by Trulia
http://www.trulia.com/crime/#

Crime and safety are important factors when deciding on where to live. Trulia aims to aggregate the data and help home buyers and homeowners make better decisions. The crime data is provided by three partners, CrimeReports.com, EveryBlock.com and SpotCrime.com. These partners work with police agencies, crime feeds and news outlets for data. Unfortunately, not all police agencies publish data and we are limited by the partners we work with. The heat maps are created by analyzing the density of 12 months of crime data across census blocks. The color scale is relative, with an even percentage distribution across all cities. This means that the top 5% of blocks with the most crime density are colored dark red across every city, the next 5%-10% of blocks are light red while the next 10%-20% of blocks are orange, etc, following an s-curve distribution. The incident-level data (black dots) represents up to 2,500 of the most recently reported crime data. Updates to this crime data varies based on agency and location, from hourly to monthly, resulting in different cities having different time frames for data. Apache Stanbol - Open Source Modular Software Stack for Semantic Content Management
http://incubator.apache.org/stanbol/

Apache Stanbol (currently in incubation ) is an open source modular software stack and reusable set of components for semantic content management. Apache Stanbol components are meant to be accessed over RESTful interfaces to provide semantic services for content management. The current code is written in Java and based on the OSGi modularization framework. Applications include extending existing content management systems with (internal or external) semantic services, and creating new types of content management systems with semantics at their core. Its main features will include: a) Persistence: services that store (or cache) semantic information and make it searchable; b) Lifting/Enhancement: services that add semantic information to “non-semantic” pieces of content; c) Knowledge models and reasoning: services that enhance the semantic information; and d) Interaction: intelligent user interface management and generation. The Apache Stanbol project was initiated by the European R&D project [IKS - Interactive Knowledge Stack for small to medium CMS providers][iks]. Some people who are working on the project are part-funded by the IKS project, as well as by several European SME CMS providers, who are adopting Apache Stanbol. WorkSnug is a tool that connects mobile workers to the nearest and best places to work in the major cities of the world. Their teams, dozens around the world, have visited and reviewed hundreds of viable workspaces. They have reviewed WiFi, noise levels, power provision, community feel, even the quality of the coffee, in workspaces across the world. They are now building a global community for mobile workers. Open Source -Open Libraries
http://opensource.califa.org/

Open Source – Open Libraries is a consortia of libraries, library systems, and other organizations committed to pursuing Open Source Software (OSS) alternatives for libraries. The primary focus of the project is on Open Source Library Systems (OSLS) as potential replacements for commercial, proprietary integrated library systems (ILS). The principles of Open Source (e.g. commitment to freedom of information, transparency, collaboration and empowerment) are entirely consistent with libraries. Just as libraries provide opportunities for people to empower themselves, Open Source software provides an opportunity for libraries to empower themselves by asserting more control over the software tools used to run their libraries. With an OSLS, libraries can more quickly respond to the needs of library customers, optimize the work of library staff, create new models for resource sharing, and take advantage of the power of collaboration. The project will focus on making members aware of the OSLS products currently available as well as the companies available to provide support, migration assistance, development, customization, and hosting. In addition, the project will educate members about Open Source business model and why it works for libraries using Open Source software and the vendors providing services. Members will also learn the ins and outs of licensing, how the software is maintained and developed, and what we mean by "collaborative development." The goal is to empower libraries and library consortia by encouraging participation and collaboration in software products generally, and encouraging them to consider an Open Source Library System such as Koha or Evergreen.
