PdfMasher - Tool That Converts PDF Articles to MOBI and EPUB
http://www.hardcoded.net/pdfmasher/

PdfMasher is a tool to convert PDF articles (newspaper, academic) to MOBI or EPUB documents. Most ebook readers support PDF files natively, but it's often a real pain to read those documents because we don't have font size control over the document like we have with native ebooks. In many cases, we have to use the zooming feature and it's just a pain. Another drawback of PDFs on ebook readers is that annotations are not supported. There are already tools to convert PDFs to ebooks like Calibre, but what they do is that they try to guess the role of each piece of text in the PDF (and that's if you're lucky). They think that in all but the simplest cases, it's a mistake to think that anything short of an AI can do that kind of guessing. Enter PdfMasher. PdfMasher asks the user about the role of each piece of text, and does it in an efficient manner. Your PDF has a header on each page and you don't want them to litter your text? Sort text elements by Y-position (thus grouping them all together), shift select the elements and flag them as ignored. They will not appear on your final HTML. Your PDF has footnotes on many pages? Sort your elements by text content (thus grouping all elements with the text starting with a number together) and flag them as footnotes. They will be moved to the end of the document, and PdfMasher will try to create hyperlinks to footnote references. This has been added to the tools section of Research Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

BookmarkQ - Creates an Easy Shareable URL That Points Directly To a Quote On a Website
http://bquot.com/

BookmarkQ is a utility that allows users to create a short URL to a selected text on a Web page. This is helpful, when you wish people that you share a URL with would focus on a specific Web page area (see Use Cases for more information). The concept is very similar to other URL shortener services, with the exception that BookmarkQ not only restores the location of the original page, but also reveals and highlights the originally selected text. How does BookmarQ work? BookmarkQ "remembers" the location of the selected text along with the original Web site URL. When URL created with BookmarkQ is opened in Web browser, the original site is presented through bquot.com proxy. Originally selected text is then found on the page and revealed. Click.to - One Click To Your Favorite App
http://www.clicktoapp.com/

Once upon a time, you were forced to awkwardly mark and copy text from one location and paste the text to the (hopefully correct) other location. Pictures to be uploaded had to be located and selected with the internet-browser’s file-dialog. An unwieldy, time-consuming and frequently irritating waste of time. And if the text was in another language, it had to be marked up, copied, and passed through translation-software, before being inserted in its final destination. Now, this can all happen much faster and easier. The advantages of click.to are obvious. Text, images, videos, and other documents which are selected can be sent to other applications with a single click. And the programs can even handle the selection automatically. You might say, click.to transforms everything in your computer into a hyperlink. This has been added to the tools section of Research Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

International Human Development Indicators
http://hdr.undp.org/en/data/explorer/

The human development data utilized in the preparation of the Human Development Index (HDI) and other composite indices featured in the Human Development Report are provided by a variety of public international sources and represent the best and most current statistics available for those indicators at the time of the preparation of this annual report. Calculations of HDI values and country rankings are the sole responsibility of the Human Development Report Office. The 2010 Human Development Report, an editorially independent publication commissioned by the United Nations Development Programme, was published in print and online on November 4 2010. The aim of the Human Development Report is to stimulate global, regional and national policy discussions on issues that are relevant to human development. To be of relevance, the data in the Report requires the highest standards of data quality, consistency, transparency and accountability. Several steps are taken each year to ensure that the Report maintains high quality and reliability. These steps include partnering with many national and international statistical agencies. In this section, you will find an extensive array of information to help understand how the data presented in the Report indicator tables are compiled and how they should be used and interpreted. You will find all of the sources for the data used and the contact information for the major statistical agencies. These are often specialized agencies of the United Nations system working on issues such as health—World Health Organization (WHO), education—United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Institute for Statistics, and labour market statistics—International Labour Organization (ILO) and many more, including for the first time mean years of schooling data from Barro and Lee. Several mechanisms have also been adopted by the Human Development Report Office (HDRO) to ensure that the data we publish is of high quality and relevance. In addition to the small in-house team of qualified statisticians, a Senior Statistical Advisor reviews all of HDRO's statistical work. This process is supplemented by consultations with a standing Statistical Advisory Panel (SAP). A select group of distinguished national, international professionals and select United Nations Statistical Commission members participate in the Advisory Panel while the peer review process is done through leading regional and national statistical offices as well as international organizations. Nonetheless several data gaps and quality issues remain. These include issues of inconsistency and incoherence between international data series and the timing of data revisions by different agencies. International cooperation is improving these deficiencies and HDRO is an active participant in this process, bringing these issues to light in the global report and seeking resolution from the relevant agencies. Select writings on issues of statistical methodology that serve as the theoretical background for the measurement of human development are also presented.
