http://digitalcommons.usu.edu/nrei/

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues (NREI), first published in 1993, is a monographic series that recognizes its role in educating natural resources leaders who can then provide the guidance needed to increase the production of the earth's renewable resources while sustaining/enhancing the global environment. The journal is published in a series of volumes, each addressing a single topic and often associated with an organized symposium. The scope of Natural Resources and Environmental Issues (NREI) encompasses all subjects related to the terrestrial sciences, aquatic resources, and environmental studies. The monographic subjects often address critical resources in environments where scarcity influences management, quality of life, and the functioning of natural landscapes. They hope that each issue will serve as a model for understanding and addressing issues in wildland, agricultural land, and urban land ecosystems. Apache Pig - Platform for Analyzing Large Datasets
http://pig.apache.org/

Apache Pig is a platform for analyzing large data sets that consists of a high-level language for expressing data analysis programs, coupled with infrastructure for evaluating these programs. The salient property of Pig programs is that their structure is amenable to substantial parallelization, which in turns enables them to handle very large data sets. At the present time, Pig's infrastructure layer consists of a compiler that produces sequences of Map-Reduce programs, for which large-scale parallel implementations already exist (e.g., the Hadoop subproject). Pig's language layer currently consists of a textual language called Pig Latin, which has the following key properties: a) Ease of programming. It is trivial to achieve parallel execution of simple, "embarrassingly parallel" data analysis tasks. Complex tasks comprised of multiple interrelated data transformations are explicitly encoded as data flow sequences, making them easy to write, understand, and maintain; b) Optimization opportunities. The way in which tasks are encoded permits the system to optimize their execution automatically, allowing the user to focus on semantics rather than efficiency; and c) Extensibility. Users can create their own functions to do special-purpose processing. This has been added to Data mining Resources Subject Tracer™.

Breakout Labs
http://www.breakoutlabs.org/

Breakout Labs is the Thiel Foundation’s newest program. Through Breakout Labs, they are reshaping the way early-stage science is funded, so that independent researchers and early-stage companies can advance their most radical ideas. Venture capital firms want research that can be quickly brought to market, and federal funding offers little room for risky, unproven ideas. They are jumping into this funding gap to energize innovative research. Breakout Labs is not a typical foundation grant—they are a revolutionary, revolving funding model where successful projects fund the next generation of audacious scientific exploration. LiveMinutes - Makes Meetings Simple and Collaborative
http://liveminutes.com/

Say you need to rapidly discuss a document (ppt, xls, doc) with your peers. Today you send it by email, or via DropBox, call your peers, everyone opens the document on his own and starts discussing, but you don't know if you're all on the same page, literally. With LiveMinutes, just share a meeting link with your peer, upload your docs, discuss and annotate them in real-time (in-browser audio or Skype), and capture the meeting's interaction in beautiful reports! This works great for discussing a presentation, a PhotoShop design, or an Excel budget. The meeting might start with a discussion on a document, but often participants need to draw a schema or fetch content on the Web. LiveMinutes integrates all these tools in one. At the end of the meeting, LiveMinutes generates a beautiful report capturing the meeting's interaction. Teams can keep track of meetings and decisions made, and pass the information to others. Twournal - Twitter To Journal
http://twournal.com/

Twournal allows you to create, buy and sell twitter books printed from your tweets. All Twournals have color covers, can include replies and photos from services such as Twitpic and Yfrog in color or black and white. You can choose a custom picture for your front cover. Select which tweets you want to start and end at. And you can add a dedication message to appear after your title. They have also added the option to sell your Twournal. Which they hope people will use to create unique products for their friends and fans. Over time tweets can tell a story or remind us of moments. In 20 years we don’t know whether twitter will be around but your Twournal will be. Who knows maybe your great grandkids will dig it up in the attic in the next century. Twournal is owned by InvaderMedia LLC and was founded by the Mano brothers Avaz and Feraz. This has been added to the tools section of Research Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog. This will be added to Social Informatics Subject Tracer™.

Urban Public Economics Review (UPER)
http://www.uper.org/

The Urban Public Economics Review (UPER) is a six-monthly journal dedicated to provides a focal point for the publication of research papers in the expanding field of urban public economics. The local public economics plays its role in a particular context owing to global economics, technological changes, large conurbations, environmental problems, aging population and the transition towards a type of economy based on knowledge and the society of information. In this framework, local public economics are turning into urban public economics. Imbalance between the institutional scheme and the real territory, triggers negative effects on the social welfare that public policies are trying to secure. For a variety of reasons, linked to the development of urban settings, rural and urban public finances face increasing financial difficulties. Nevertheless, quantitatively speaking, the former one shows to have turned into just a residual problem. On the other hand, the service sector of local governments, are heading for “intermunicipality”. Thus, the exploitation of economics of scale is tried to be faced up, to get financial margins for inversion, contribute to environmental management and fight against exclusion. Urban Public Economics Review is available free of charge as an Open Access journal on the Internet. Abstracts available online. Articles available in PDF format.
