News Integrity Initiative

The News Integrity Initiative at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at the City University of New York is a $14 million fund supporting efforts to connect journalists, technologists, academic institutions, non-profits, and other organizations from around the world to foster informed and engaged communities, combat media manipulation, and support inclusive, constructive, and respectful civic discourse. They envision a world in which people are armed with accurate, comprehensive news and information that strengthens their sense of ownership and opportunities in the places where they live and work, empowers them to participate in community decision-making, and deepens their understanding of and empathy for people of all backgrounds and experiences. Through grants, applied research, events, and other activities, NII, the Newmark Graduate School of Journalism and our partners around the world will build bridges between the public and journalists to foster collaboration and develop mutual respect and trust. This includes helping journalists learn new ways to listen to, empathize with, and reflect the needs and goals of the communities they serve. We will prioritize work that meaningfully represents and reaches diverse communities. Additionally, we will help news organizations bring journalism to the public where they are, in conversations on many platforms. They will examine new ways to achieve news literacy, broadly defined, and investigate the roots of trust and mistrust in news, as well as the influence and impact of manipulation and misinformation on the public conversation. NII also will extend the longstanding work of the Tow-Knight Center for Entrepreneurial Journalism’s efforts to build bridges between platforms and publishers, encouraging and supporting collaboration in service of the public and of journalism. The News Integrity Initiative is a project of the Foundation for the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism under the auspices of the school’s Tow-Knight Center for Entrepreneurial Journalism. The fund is seeded with $14 million in grants from a coalition of partners, which currently include Facebook, Craig Newmark Philanthropic Fund, Ford Foundation, AppNexus, Knight Foundation, Tow Foundation, Betaworks, Mozilla, and Democracy Fund.
