Vetter http://opensource.mit.edu/papers/vetter2.pdf Abstract Some free or open source software infects other software with its licensing terms. Free or open source software is a copyright based licensing system. It typically allows modification and distribution on conditions such as source code availability, royalty-free use and other requirements. Some licenses require distribution of modifications under the same terms. A license is infectious when it has a strong scope for the modifications provision. The scope arises from a broad conception of software derivative works. A strong infectious ambit would apply itself to modified software, and to software intermixed or coupled with non-open-source software. Popular open source software, including the GNU/Linux operating system, uses a license with this feature. This Article assesses the efficacy of broad infectious license terms to determine their incentive effects for open source and proprietary software. The analysis doubts beneficial effects. Rather, on balance, such terms may produce incentives detrimental to interoperability and coexistence between open and proprietary code. As a result, open source licensing should precisely define infectious terms in order to support open source development without countervailing effects and misaligned incentives. posted by Marcus | 4:05 AM ArgoUML http://argouml.tigris.org/ ArgoUML is a modelling tool that helps you do your design using UML. It is easy for humans to read and write. It is easy for machines to parse and generate. It is based on a subset of the JavaScript Programming Language, Standard ECMA-262 3rd Edition - December 1999. JSON is a text format that is completely language independent but uses conventions that are familiar to programmers of the C-family of languages, including C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Perl, Python, and many others. These properties make JSON an ideal data-interchange language. JSON is built on two structures: a) A collection of name/value pairs. In various languages, this is realized as an object, record, struct, dictionary, hash table, keyed list, or associative array, and b) An ordered list of values. In most languages, this is realized as an array. These are universal data structures. Virtually all modern programming languages support them in one form or another. It makes sense that a data format that is interchangable with programming languages also be based on these structures. Madigan http://books.nap.edu/catalog/10746.html Memory is perhaps the most extraordinary phenomenon in the natural world. Every person s brain holds literally millions of bits of information in long-term storage. This vast memory store includes our extensive vocabulary and knowledge of language; the tremendous and unique variety of facts we ve amassed; all the skills we ve learned, from walking and talking to musical and athletic performance; many of the emotions we feel; and the continuous sensations, feelings, and understandings of the world we term consciousness. And we routinely access this tremendous volume of data in the blink of an eye. Without memory there can be no mind as we understand it. Focusing on cutting edge research in behavioral and neuroscience, Memory, the second title in the Science Essentials series, is a primer of our current scientific understanding of the mechanics of memory and learning. During the past two decades, memory research has accelerated and we have seen an explosion of new knowledge about the brain. For example, there now exists a wide-ranging and successful applied science devoted specifically and exclusively to the study of memory that has yielded better procedures for eliciting valid recollections in legal settings and improved our track record for diagnosing and treating memory disorders. Everyone fascinated by the cutting-edge scientific research that is revealing the incredible scope and power of the human brain will find this to be an unforgettable book. In particular, we use Design Structure Matrices (DSMs) to map the dependencies between the elements of a design and define metrics that allow us to compare the structures of different designs. We first use these metrics to compare the architectures of two software products – the Linux operating system and the Mozilla web browser – that were developed via contrasting modes of organization: specifically, open source versus proprietary development. We then track the evolution of Mozilla, paying particular attention to a purposeful “re-design” effort that was undertaken with the intention of making the product more “modular.” We find significant differences in structure between Linux and the first version of Mozilla, suggesting that Linux had a more modular architecture. We also find that the redesign of Mozilla resulted in an architecture that was significantly more modular than that of its predecessor, and indeed, than that of Linux. Our results, while exploratory, are consistent with a view that different modes of organization are associated with designs that possess different structures. However, we also illustrate that purposeful managerial actions can have a large impact on structure. This latter result is important given recent moves to release proprietary software into the public domain. These moves are likely to fail unless the product possesses an architecture that facilitates participation. Our paper provides evidence that a tightly-coupled design can be adapted to meet this objective. posted by Marcus | 4:10 AM Minimal-Intelligence Agents for Bargaining Behaviors in Market-Based Environments by Dave Cliff and Janet Bruten http://www.hpl.hp.com/techreports/97/HPL-97-91.html Abstract: This report describes simple mechanisms that allow autonomous software agents to engage in bargaining behavoirs in market-based environments. Groups of agents with such mechanisms could be used in applications including market-based control, internet commerce, and economic modelling. After an introductory discussion of the rationale for this work, and a brief overview of key concepts from economics, work in market-based control is reviewed to highlight the need for bargaining agents. Following this, the early experimental economics work of Smith (1962) and the recent results of Gode and Sunder (1993) are described. Gode and Sunder's work, using "zero-intelligence" (ZI) traders that act randomly within a structured market, appears to imply that convergence to the theoretical equilibrium price is determined more by market structure than by the intelligence of the traders in that market: if this is true, developing mechanisms for bargaining agents is of very limited relevance. However, it is demonstrated here that the average transaction prices of ZI traders can vary significantly from the theoretical equilibrium level when supply and demand are asymmetric, and that the degree of difference from equilibrium is predictable from a priori statistical analysis. In this sense, it is shown here that Gode and Sunder's results are artefacts of their experimental regime. Following this, 'zero- intelligence-plus' (ZIP) traders are introduced: like ZI traders, these simple agents make stochastic bids. Unlike ZI traders, they employ an elementary form of machine learning. Groups of ZIP traders interacting in experimental markets similar to those used by Smith (1962) and Gode and Sunder (1993) are demonstrated, and it is shown that the performance of ZIP traders is significantly closer to the human data than is the performance of Gode and Sunder's ZI traders. The project is the first of its kind to develop a large-scale and highly complex computer-based society. The project's results may have larger implications for information technologies design, evolutionary computing systems, artificial intelligence and linguistics. The project's goal is to evolve an artificial society capable of exploring and understanding its environment through cooperation and interaction. The agents are sufficiently complex and their environment demanding, which enables them to develop a communication system to learn how to cooperate and to adapt. The development of social learning by passing on knowledge using language within the same generation is a key innovation of the project. Social learning enables the society to rapidly develop an "understanding" of its world collectively. By probing the collective mind we learn how agents perceive their environment and their society. They also assess what skills they have developed to adapt successfully. Their strengths are in the pre-startup and early stage phases -- they can help with later-stage operational and expansion problems, but so can many others -- SCORE, the SBDCs, independent business consultants, etc. They differ from most of the other entrepreneur websites in that their interests tend toward the inexperienced who are trying to start and develop "life-style" businesses. Those who are looking to bet big bucks on big results are well served by the other sites. While "making money" is essential in every business, they feel that enjoying it -- having fun doing it -- is just as important -- and not everyone finds the tensions that come with chasing "big" business enjoyable. We work best with those who have creative skills -- who simply want to use those skills to do their "own thing" -- not someone else's. Successful partitioning of a machine to support the concurrent execution of multiple operating systems poses several challenges. Firstly, virtual machines must be isolated from one another: it is not acceptable for the execution of one to adversely affect the performance of another. This is particularly true when virtual machines are owned by mutually untrusting users. Secondly, it is necessary to support a variety of different operating systems to accommodate the heterogeneity of popular applications. Thirdly, the performance overhead introduced by virtualization should be small. Xen is a virtual machine monitor for x86 that supports execution of multiple guest operating systems with unprecedented levels of performance and resource isolation. Xen is Open Source software, released under the terms of the GNU General Public License. We have a fully functional ports of Linux 2.4 and 2.6 running over Xen, and regularly use it for running demanding applications like MySQL, Apache and PostgreSQL. And if the system were phonetic, words couldn't be misspelled! The usual 26 letter alphabet just doesn't have enough letters to represent all the 32+ sounds used in English, especially vowel sounds, so several letters are often used to represent a single sound. The word "ought," for example, uses five letters to write only two sounds. So a really slick form of handwriting would use one stroke for one sound. Simple, but too difficult? Not necessarily. You just need to learn to hear the sounds that you use when speaking English so you can write them, and then learn some simple symbols to represent those sounds. Since you have been taught to pay attention to 26 letters and not the actual sounds of English, tuning in to speech sounds may take a little time, but can also be quite interesting and fun. The prevalence of this activity is yet another example of the many ways online Americans use the internet to gather practical information for their everyday lives. Using the internet as a go-to reference desk for “how-to” help naturally befits those who have “always-on” internet connections at their fingertips. More than two-thirds (69%) of internet users who have high-speed connections all around them (at both home and work) have sought “how-to” resources online. That compares to 61% of home broadband users and 55% of home dial-up users who seek do-it-yourself information. The initial search will concentrate on secondary sources as identified using the NLH Search Engine. If the question can be fully answered using these resources the search will be stopped. By crawling deep into the content of leading health and medical sites, and displaying the results in a highly intuitive, un-biased, comprehensive manner, Mamma saves consumers time and energy — eliminating the legwork for the user who typically has to visit many sites and click on numerous links before finding the right information. Mamma.com also provides the great benefit of a one-stop clickthrough feature that automatically brings users to the exact point on a page where the information the user is looking for can be found. Many search engines take users to the site's home page, where the user has to yet again conduct another search for the information. Searchers enter any health-related topic in the search box. In just seconds, results are delivered back effectively organized for the user by topic areas such as Overview, Causes/Symptoms, Treatments, News, FAQ, etc. The user simply clicks on the topic he's most interested in and is instantly directed to medical content from a variety of the Web's leading health sites. This means Mamma.com Health Search does all the work and delivers users the most relevant links to deep web content, by screening out volumes of irrelevant information — the typical root cause of search frustration. This area of study draws on a number of legal specialties: intellectual property, business law, free speech and privacy, telecommunications, and criminal law—each of which is undergoing doctrinal and practical changes as a result of new and emerging technologies. DLTR strives to be a “review” in the classic sense of the word. We examine new developments, synthesize them around larger theoretical issues, and critically examine the implications. We also review and consolidate recent cases, proposed bills, and administrative policies. However, DLTR is unique among its sister journals at Duke, and indeed among all law journals. Unlike traditional journals, which focus primarily on lengthy scholarly articles, DLTR focuses on short, direct, and accessible pieces, called issue briefs or “iBriefs.” In fact, the goal of an iBrief is to provide cutting edge legal insight both to lawyers and to non-legal professionals. In addition, DLTR strives to be the first legal publication to address breaking issues. To that end, we publish on the first and fifteenth of every month during the school year (September until April) and less frequently during the summer. Duke Law & Technology Review is available free of charge as an Open Access journal on the Internet.
