The Department of Anthropology, California Academy of Sciences provides Internet access to its extensive research data collection. The anthropology collection comprises approximately 17,000 objects, most of which are ethnographic. The collection was gathered from the indigenous cultures of western North America (exclusive of Mexico) and the Pacific Rim, including all Pacific islands and East Asia. Currently the database includes over 8,000 digital images documenting the collection's general holdings from the U.S. Southwest and the Pacific Islands, and basketry from California. Digital photographing of the remainder of the collection is an ongoing project. Individual researchers or research groups, with the stipulation that permission be sought for redistribution in any form, may use these data.
