By the end of 2003, the number of China's Internet users is expected to hit 78 million, writes the China Daily newspaper, citing a report by the Internet Society of China. The article also stated that the number of China's websites is expected to increase to 500,000, and online computers would reach 30 million by the end of the year. Hu Qiheng, chairwoman of the society, was quoted as saying the Internet sector in China still lagged developed countries. The number of Internet users grew an annual 48.5 percent to 68 million people by the end of June, according to the China Internet Network Information Center. The semi-official research center said that China overtook Japan at the end of 2002 as the world's second-largest group of online users, second only to the US.
