Digital Universe

Digital Universe
http://www.digitaluniverse.net/

The mission of the Digital Universe is ambitious and never–ending: to organize and contextualize the sum total of human knowledge and make it available to everyone online. It is a growing network of commercial–free portals mapping the highest–quality Internet destinations, as recommended by experts recognized in their fields. These experts review public contributions, create context and attest to the reliability, integrity, and accuracy of the portals. Professionals at more than 100 universities and institutions in 16 countries are already involved in the initial phase of just one component of the Digital Universe: the Earth Portal's Encyclopedia of Earth, coming online in June 2006. Solving the great challenges of our time requires a new kind of powerful, non–commercial information medium for people everywhere, and the Digital Universe aims to supply it. As it emerges, people will finally begin to find online the best information on thousands of subjects, placed in proper context and perspective, with no influence whatsoever from advertising or sponsored links. With increasing use of multimedia environments, the eventual result will be something akin to a digital replica of our world and the universe in which we live, as a new kind of "auto–educational navigation environment" to explore, communicate and play online. Several years in planning and development have gone into this effort, and much of that work is behind the scenes – in the tools, systems and governance methodologies for creating and managing portals in the Digital Universe. This launch represents, essentially, the real starting line for the project, in the sense that large scale content development and organization can now commence.
