Zimbio - The People's Guide to the Web
http://www.zimbio.com/

Their network of public portals are designed to help people quickly get down the learning curve on any topic of interest by seeing what other people are reading, saying, and recommending about the topic. Public portals are interactive, dynamic websites that offer a range of features including group blogging, member photos, links to favorite websites, RSS headlines, tracking of search results, and discussion forums. People use public portals to: a) Get informed on a particular topic of interest by using the organization and recommendations of others who have already spent time and energy getting informed on the same topic, b) Stay up to speed by getting a quick snapshot of what and who has been happening in the news, in the blogs, and in the Zimbio community, and c) Share knowledge, ask questions, get answers, and connect with like-minded people. Instructables

Instructables - Step By Step Collaboration
http://www.instructables.com/

Instructables is a website brought to you by the partners at www.squid-labs.com. They make a lot of stuff, for business, and for pleasure. They have been looking for a long time for a convenient system for documenting their how-to projects, and the things they make, but it simply didn't exist. They decided they would have to develop it themself, and here it is, it will evolve as they grow to meet their own rigorous demands, and those of their users. Principal in our demands is convenience - it should take less time to document a project than it did to build it. They have been thinking and working in this space indirectly for more than 5 years, following the developments in Open Source Software, blogs, wikis, and version control systems. This has been added to Tutorial Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

FreeMarker - Template Engine
http://freemarker.sourceforge.net/

FreeMarker is a "template engine"; a generic tool to generate text output (anything from HTML to autogenerated source code) based on templates. It's a Java package, a class library for Java programmers. It's not an application for end-users in itself, but something that programmers can embed into their products. FreeMarker is designed to be practical for the generation of HTML Web pages, particularly by servlet-based applications following the MVC (Model View Controller) pattern. The idea behind using the MVC pattern for dynamic Web pages is that you separate the designers (HTML authors) from the programmers. Everybody works on what they are good at. Designers can change the appearance of a page without programmers having to change or recompile code, because the application logic (Java programs) and page design (FreeMarker templates) are separated. Templates do not become polluted with complex program fragments. This separation is useful even for projects where the programmer and the HMTL page author is the same person, since it helps to keep the application clear and easily maintainable. Although FreeMarker has some programming capabilities, it is not a full-blown programming language like PHP. Instead, Java programs prepare the data to be displayed (like issue SQL queries), and FreeMarker just generates textual pages that display the prepared data using templates. Journal of Laboratory and Clinical Medicine
http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/journal/00222143

The Journal of Laboratory and Clinical Medicine delivers clinical investigation and research articles to physicians, academic clinician-scientists, and laboratory consultants. Interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary in scope, it keeps readers up-to-date on significant biomedical research from all subspecialties of internal medicine. The Journal encourages the submission of manuscripts describing primarily original investigations in the broad fields of laboratory and clinical medicine. Papers submitted by nonmembers of the Central Society for Clinical Research will be given equal consideration with those of members. Reports of purely laboratory or animal investigations should have a clear bearing on the problems of human disease. The Journal will consider manuscripts that are primarily methodologic if the method is novel, if its development poses or answers important biologic questions, or if its description includes data applying it to a study of potential interest to our readership. Papers describing refinements of routine clinical laboratory tests are not encouraged. The Journal publishes reviews and welcomes submission of review manuscripts. Both state-of-the-art comprehensive reviews, directed at research scientists in specific fields, and more general informative reviews, directed at the broader community of clinical investigators, are welcome. Authors of reviews should realize that the Journal is multidisciplinary and that review articles for such a journal require appropriate interpretive material. Clarity of presentation is a major criterion for acceptance. The Journal of Laboratory and Clinical Medicine is known and respected around the world. The Journal is recommended for initial purchase in two Brandon-Hill studies, Selected List of Books and Journals for the Small medical Library and Selected List of Books and Journals in Allied Health Sciences. World Drug Report 2006
http://www.unodc.org/unodc/en/world_drug_report.html

Some 200 million people, or 5 percent of the global population age 15-64, have used illicit drugs at least once in the last 12 months. Among this population are people from almost every country on earth. More people are involved in the production and trafficking of illicit drugs and still more are touched by the devastating social and economic costs of this problem. Partially a consequence of its pervasiveness and partially a consequence of the illicit and hidden nature of the problem, reliable analysis and statistics on the production, trafficking and use of illicit drugs are rare. The World Drug Report 2006 endeavours to fill this gap. It provides one of the most comprehensive overviews of illicit drug trends at the international level. In addition, it presents a special thematic chapter on cannabis, by far the most widely produced, trafficked and used drug in the world. The analysis of trends, some going back 10 years or more, is presented in Volume 1. Detailed statistics are presented in Volume 2. Taken together, these volumes provide the most up-to-date view of today's illicit drug situation. This will be added to Healthcare Resources 2006 Internet MiniGuide.

Natural Language & Linguistic Theory
http://www.springerlink.com/link.asp?id=102968

Natural Language & Linguistic Theory provides a forum for the discussion of theoretical research that pays close attention to natural language data, so as to provide a channel of communication between researchers of a variety of points of view. The journal actively seeks to bridge the gap between descriptive work and work of a highly theoretical, less empirically oriented nature. In attempting to strike this balance, a primary goal of the journal is to encourage work which makes complex language data accessible to those unfamiliar with the language area being studied, and work which makes complex theoretical positions more accessible to those working outside the theoretical framework under review. The journal is structured to include:

* generative studies on the syntax, semantics, phonology and the lexicon of natural language;
* interdisciplinary contributions written with theoretical linguists in mind;
* surveys of recent theoretical developments which facilitate accessibility for a graduate student readership;
* reactions/replies to recent papers;
* book reviews of important linguistics titles;
* special topic issues.

Nutrition Reviews
http://www.ilsi.org/Publications/NutritionReviews/

Nutrition Reviews provides state-of-the-art information on developments in nutrition, dietetics, food science, and nutrition science policy. The journal's contributors -- leading researchers, practitioners, and authorities in fields related to nutrition and food science -- survey hundreds of international biomedical, nutrition, policy, and food science publications for emerging issues of topical importance. Nutrition Reviews publishes authoritative and critical review articles (not original research) on current topics in nutrition science, food science, clinical nutrition, and nutrition policy. Biologic and practical nutritional implications of the topic should be clearly outlined. It is important that the reader learn not only about a particular topic, but why it is important and/or relevant to the broad field of nutrition. Nutrition Reviews readers are mostly nutrition scientists, researchers, practitioners, and students. One-third of the readership is international.

* Lead Review Articles are comprehensive reviews of a broad topic;

http://www.podomatic.com/

PodOmatic specializes in the creation of sophisticated tools and services that enable anyone to easily find, create, distribute, promote and listen to both audio and video podcasts. The premiere destination for veteran and novice podcast creators and consumers, PodOmatic is the largest and most widely used service for creating and hosting podcasts. Not since blogging has a technology seemed to come out of nowhere and been so widely adopted as podcasting. Roughly 4.8 million people downloaded a podcast in 2005 - compared to just over 800,000 the previous year. Despite this incredible growth, many would-be-podcasters face an array of technical challenges or must purchase complicated audio equipment or recording software before getting started. Until these challenges can be overcome, market adoption of podcasting will remain slow and limited to the crafty, tech-savvy and patient. To expedite podcasting's transition from fad to mainstream, our goal is to drop these barriers of entry for people interested in producing podcasts.

Textpattern

Text Pattern - Content Management System
http://www.textpattern.com/

A free, flexible, elegant, easy-to-use content management system for all kinds of websites, even weblogs. Built into Textpattern is Textile, a simple syntax for nudging plain text into structurally sound and stylistically rich web content. Ordinarily fussy text amendments such as headers, hyperlinks, image tags and tables are created with one or two simple markers. Compared to navigating the tag soup of markup, writing and revising with Textile is much more intuitive, being closer to working with ordinary text. Once you’re ready to publish, copy marked up with Textile is automatically converted to valid XHTML, and because Textpattern stores both versions of each article, revising and updating is a snap. When composing or readying articles for publication in Textpattern, you can switch between three views of the article: plain text, XHTML (the code with which a web browser renders the article), and a rendered preview. European Educational Research Journal
http://www.wwwords.co.uk/eerj/

The European Educational Research Journal has been created by the European Educational Research Association (EERA) to further the aims of the association and its members, educational researchers across Europe. EERA was founded to promote educational research in Europe, to foster cooperation between associations of educational research and to enable clear communications with and between policy makers and teachers. EERA intends its journal to build a transnational community of scholars in and through the idea of the 'European Educational Research Space'. The current state of educational research in Europe is mixed: some research traditions and methodologies are shared across Europe yet others are often mutually exclusive; policy-driven redefinition of the idea of research, from a place of moral inquiry into a process of technical action, is taking place; and there is a discernible move away from its location in university and public departments to a range of public and private service deliverers. The context in which European Union educational researchers are working today is one in which the mobilizing discourses of the 'European Educational Research Area' and the 'European Research Area', combined with other 'borderless' flows of internationalisation of programmes, public-private partnerships and university alliances, are re-shaping the milieu of research in education. A challenge for EERA is to understand this process and to render globalisation visible. At the same time, the difficulty of creating a vital European research area follows from the lack of shared information about public research and national and European research policies in education. Europe is a place; but it is a changing place and also an imagined place. The idea of the 'European Educational Research Space' can be used as a metaphor for a culturally specific intellectual and social practice among educational researchers which engages, in many diverse ways, with local and global similarity and difference. The European Educational Research Journal will be a forum for constructive dialogue that recognizes particularity and difference, that acknowledges and seeks to address the relative weakness of links between social science and education research in Europe, and that seeks to develop methodologies for studying the new 'space' of educational research in Europe. The Journal will publish aspects of educational research which illuminates particular cases and contexts within the problematic of the 'European Educational Research Space'. This will be added to Education and Distance Learning Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

Google Web Toolkit (GWT)
http://code.google.com/webtoolkit/

Google Web Toolkit (GWT) is a Java software development framework that makes writing AJAX applications like Google Maps and Gmail easy for developers who don't speak browser quirks as a second language. Writing dynamic web applications today is a tedious and error-prone process; you spend 90% of your time working around subtle incompatibilities between web browsers and platforms, and JavaScript's lack of modularity makes sharing, testing, and reusing AJAX components difficult and fragile. GWT lets you avoid many of these headaches while offering your users the same dynamic, standards-compliant experience. You write your front end in the Java programming language, and the GWT compiler converts your Java classes to browser-compliant JavaScript and HTML. Swarm - A New Way To Browse the Web and Find the Most Interesting Sites
http://www.swarmthe.com/

Swarm shows you what websites people are visiting, right now. Swarm is a graphical map of hundreds of websites, all connecting to each other. It updates itself every second with where people are going and coming from. As sites become more popular, they move towards the center of the swarm. Website traffic is symbolized with thin lines. Each time you see a line appear, it means someone has moved from one site to the other. You can gauge how many people are swarming around based on the number of lines. Swarm is a useful tool for browsing the web, not searching it. You need to visit the site with an open mind and you may find some really cool stuff. FareCompare is a one of a kind airfare centric vacation and business travel planning site that promises consumers early access to the lowest published and discount air fares. FareCompare is first and foremost an air fare technology company. THeir low fare deal engine is powered by the raw fare and rule data which comes directly from each airline (not scraped from reservation sites). Their technology allows them to provide a real-time, early access, air fare alert system that guarantees consumers first crack at the best prices. FareCompare concentrates on mining over 30 million domestic and international fares and rules from over 400 airlines and subsequently boiling this information down to provide a broad geographical and timeline view of fare prices for flexible travelers who search for low fares as well as a historical fare price and side-by-side comparison views to help those with limited travel flexibility. They use a variety of new travel planning and visual technologies including maps and satellite imagery, flight information, historical graphs, low fare star rating, side-by-side airline comparisons and seat availability checks. BookCrossing

BookCrossing
http://www.bookcrossing.com/

BookCrossing.com is a labor of love that was conceived and is maintained by Humankind Systems, Inc., a software and internet development company with offices in Kansas City, Missouri, and Sandpoint, Idaho. Looking for a break from the doldrums of creating yet another e-commerce website (that's just what the world needs), or email server application (oooh, those are doubly exciting), Humankind partner Ron Hornbaker sought to create a community site that would be the first of its kind, that would give back to the world at large, and that would provide warm fuzzy feelings whenever he worked on it. BookCrossing.com was the result. The idea came to Ron back in March of 2001, as he and his wife Kaori were admiring the PhotoTag.org site, which tracks disposable cameras loosed into the wild. He already knew about the popularity of WheresGeorge.com (which tracks U.S. currency by serial number), and that got him thinking: what other physical object might people enjoy tracking? A few minutes later, after a glance at his full bookshelf, the idea of tracking books occurred to him. After two hours of research on the internet, Ron realized, to his surprise, that nothing like BookCrossing had been done on any significant scale. And so they went to work. By 3 A.M. that night, they had decided on the name (zero hits for "bookcrossing" on Google), registered the domain, and Kaori had sketched the running book logo on a crossing sign. The rest was merely execution. This has been added to Reference Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.
