Wednesday, August 31, 2005 Innovativeness of Open Source Software Projects by Krzysztof Klincewicz http://opensource.mit.edu/papers/klincewicz.pdf Abstract: The paper addresses an ongoing debate about the innovativeness of open source projects and critically evaluates the innovative potential of 500 most active projects registered by SourceForge.net. The analysis is based on a proposed framework, distinguishing between radical inventions, technology / platform modifications, and marketing innovations. Research findings include relatively low levels of technical newness in the studies sample, alongside high interest of developers and users in the innovative projects. The article discusses the underlying mechanisms, restricting innovativeness of community-driven open source efforts, and postulates the establishment of an institution of idea brokers playing roles corresponding to venture capitalists in the commercial software domain. posted by Marcus | 4:15 AM USIIA New White Paper Released http://www.usiia.org/news/0503principles.doc In a white paper released last week, the US Internet Industry Association (USIIA) announced a set of self-regulatory principles for broadband and Internet Protocol-based services. PRIDE allows researchers who work in the field of proteomics the large-scale study of proteins to share information much more readily than was previously possible. This will allow them to exploit the growing mass of information on how the bodys complement of proteins is altered in many disease states, paving the way towards new predictive and diagnostic methods in medicine. Proteomics is the identification and characterization of all the proteins produced by a particular type of cell, tissue or organism under certain conditions. While an individuals genome remains the same from one moment to the next, proteomes are extremely dynamic. For example, the set of proteins produced by your liver will change in response to eating a meal, and a healthy liver produces a different set of proteins than a diseased liver. Proteomics therefore has great potential, not only for helping us to understand how our environment affects the healthy body, but also for understanding disease mechanisms and developing new ways of diagnosing disease. Large international efforts to document all the proteins produced by several tissues, including liver, brain and blood plasma, are now underway. But although the high-throughput identification of proteins is gathering momentum, until recently there was no straightforward means of sharing or comparing the results. Proteomics labs were publishing their protein identifications, explains Henning Hermjakob, leader of the EBIs Proteomics Services Team, but they had no guidelines as what information should be captured or how the information should be formatted. The proteomics community rapidly realized that researchers would only be able to exploit the results of their endeavours if they had a central repository that would allow them to make their results publicly available using agreed data standards. In truth, it's far bigger than it appears. The Web is made up of hundreds of billions of Web documents -- far more than the 8 billion to 20 billion claimed by Google or Yahoo. But most of these Web pages are largely unreachable by most search engines because they are stored in databases that cannot be accessed by Web crawlers. Now a San Mateo start-up called Glenbrook Networks -- says it has devised a way to tunnel far into the 'deep web. and extract this previously inaccessible information. ... Komissarchik and her father, Edward Komissarchik, say they have figured out how to analyze the forms on Web pages and understand the type of information the sites are looking for. On average, these members of the Class of 2009 will be 18 years old, which means they were born in 1987. Starbucks, souped-up car stereos, telephone voicemail systems, and Bill Gates have always been a part of their lives. Each August, as students start to arrive, Beloit College releases the Beloit College Mindset List, which offers a world view of today's entering college students. It is the creation of Beloit’s Keefer Professor of the Humanities Tom McBride and Director of Public Affairs Ron Nief. McBride, who directs Beloit’s First Year Initiatives (FYI) program for entering students, notes that "This year’s entering students have grown up in a country where the main business has become business, and where terrorism, from obscure beginnings, has built up slowly but surely to become the threat it is today. Cable channels have become as mainstream as the 'Big 3' used to be, formality in dress has become more quaint than ever, and Aretha Franklin, Kermit the Frog and Jimmy Carter have become old-timers." “Each year,” according to Nief, “When Beloit releases the Mindset List, it is the birth year of the entering students that is the most disturbing fact for most readers. This year will come as no exception and, once again, the faculty will remain the same age as the students get younger.” This has been added to Student Resarch Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog. posted by Marcus | 4:00 AM Wednesday, August 24, 2005 Google Talk http://talk.google.com/ Google Talk is a simple and free way to talk with and send instant messages to your friends. Or what about when you are on a trip? You get totally out of sync, and don't know what you've read and haven't read. You are enraged. A server side aggregator solves this. It keeps track of what items you've read, and keeps happily checking up on your feeds no matter where you are. Whenever you want to see what's new, you just bring up a web page and scan the newest items. You can mark the items as read so they won't be shown again. Or, you can just always show the most recent N items, like the way LiveJournal's friends pages work. Also, having the aggregator in your browser eliminates the "impedance mismatch" that sometimes occurs between a desktop aggregator and your browser. Also included are the subdivisions of various countries (the links are at the bottom of the respective country entries), as well as a selection of international organizations. Recent foreign ministers of all countries are listed separately. In cases where not even the exact year of the beginning or end of a ruler's term is known, the asterisk (*) is used to indicate dates at which the person is known to have been in office, e.g., *1924 - 1925* means the term began in 1924 or earlier and ended in 1925 or later. All dates are New Style (Gregorian). (f) indicates female rulers. Birth and death years are also provided (b. = born, d. = died, s.a. = see above), but note that the given birth years may be questionable, as different sources often give contradictory information. In cases where it is particularly unclear, the birth year is followed by a question mark (e.g., 1923?) but that does not mean that the year is guaranteed to be correct when there is no question mark.
