Digital Universe

Digital Universe
http://www.digitaluniverse.net/

The mission of the Digital Universe is ambitious and never–ending: to organize and contextualize the sum total of human knowledge and make it available to everyone online. It is a growing network of commercial–free portals mapping the highest–quality Internet destinations, as recommended by experts recognized in their fields. These experts review public contributions, create context and attest to the reliability, integrity, and accuracy of the portals. Professionals at more than 100 universities and institutions in 16 countries are already involved in the initial phase of just one component of the Digital Universe: the Earth Portal's Encyclopedia of Earth, coming online in June 2006. Solving the great challenges of our time requires a new kind of powerful, non–commercial information medium for people everywhere, and the Digital Universe aims to supply it. As it emerges, people will finally begin to find online the best information on thousands of subjects, placed in proper context and perspective, with no influence whatsoever from advertising or sponsored links. With increasing use of multimedia environments, the eventual result will be something akin to a digital replica of our world and the universe in which we live, as a new kind of "auto–educational navigation environment" to explore, communicate and play online. Several years in planning and development have gone into this effort, and much of that work is behind the scenes – in the tools, systems and governance methodologies for creating and managing portals in the Digital Universe. This launch represents, essentially, the real starting line for the project, in the sense that large scale content development and organization can now commence. Journal of Mathematical Imaging and Vision
http://www.springerlink.com/link.asp?id=100293

The Journal of Mathematical Imaging and Vision is a technical journal publishing important new developments in mathematical imaging. The journal publishes research articles, invited papers, and expository articles. Current developments in new image processing hardware, the advent of multisensor data fusion, and rapid advances in vision research have led to an explosive growth in the interdisciplinary field of imaging science. This growth has resulted in the development of highly sophisticated mathematical models and theories. The journal emphasizes the role of mathematics as a rigorous basis for imaging science. This provides a sound alternative to present journals in this area. Contributions are judged on the basis of mathematical content. Articles may be physically speculative but need to be mathematically sound. Emphasis is placed on innovative or established mathematical techniques applied to vision and imaging problems in a novel way, as well as new developments and problems in mathematics arising from these applications. The scope of the journal includes:

* computational models of vision; imaging algebra and mathematical morphology
* mathematical methods in reconstruction, compactification, and coding
* filter theory
* probabilistic, statistical, geometric, topological, and fractal techniques and models in imaging science
* inverse optics
* wave theory.

Specific application areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

* all aspects of image formation and representation
* medical, biological, industrial, geophysical, astronomical and military imaging
* image analysis and image understanding
* parallel and distributed computing
* computer vision architecture design.

The journal emphasizes its commitment to present coverage in these areas which span the interest of a global audience. The Editorial Board publishes manuscripts that are well written and make a significant technical contribution.

dojo - Javascript Toolkit

dojo - Javascript Toolkit
http://dojotoolkit.org/

Dojo is an Open Source DHTML toolkit written in JavaScript. It builds on several contributed code bases (nWidgets, Burstlib, f(m)), which is why we refer to it sometimes as a "unified" toolkit. Dojo aims to solve some long-standing historical problems with DHTML which prevented mass adoption of dynamic web application development. Dojo allows you to easily build dynamic capabilities into web pages and any other environment that supports JavaScript sanely. You can use the components that Dojo provides to make your web sites more useable, responsive, and functional. With Dojo you can build degradeable user interfaces more easily, prototype interactive widgets quickly, and animate transitions. You can use the lower-level APIs and compatibility layers from Dojo to write portable JavaScript and simplify complex scripts. Dojo's event system, I/O APIs, and generic language enhancement form the basis of a powerful programming environment. You can use the Dojo build tools to write command-line unit-tests for your JavaScript code. You can use the Dojo package system to make your code easier to maintain and less platform dependent. The Dojo build process helps you optimize your JavaScript for deployment by grouping sets of files together and reuse those groups through "profiles". Dojo does all of these things by layering capabilities onto a very small core which provides the package system and little else. When you write scripts with Dojo, you can include as little or as much of the available APIs as you need to suit your needs. Dojo provides Multiple Points Of Entry, Interpreter Independence, Forward Looking APIs, and focuses on Reducing Barriers To Adoption. Dojo is being built around a single markup language that will provide application authors with a (more) simple way of declaring and using responsive DHTML interface components. Renderings may be made available in several rendering contexts (such as SVG, or perhaps even the desktop or Flash), but the markup language (DojoML) and scripting language (JavaScript) will not change. Better yet, the DojoML parser accepts extended HTML and SVG as valid input, and can be used to easily create Degradeable Responsive Applications. This has been added to World Wide Web Reference Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

JSON (JavaScript Object Notation)
http://www.json.org/

JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a lightweight data-interchange format. It is easy for humans to read and write. It is easy for machines to parse and generate. It is based on a subset of the JavaScript Programming Language, Standard ECMA-262 3rd Edition - December 1999. JSON is a text format that is completely language independent but uses conventions that are familiar to programmers of the C-family of languages, including C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Perl, Python, and many others. These properties make JSON an ideal data-interchange language. JSON is built on two structures: a) A collection of name/value pairs. In various languages, this is realized as an object, record, struct, dictionary, hash table, keyed list, or associative array, and b) An ordered list of values. In most languages, this is realized as an array, vector, list, or sequence. These are universal data structures. Virtually all modern programming languages support them in one form or another. It makes sense that a data format that is interchangable with programming languages also be based on these structures. This has been added to Script Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

Photo.net

Photo.net
http://www.Photo.net/

Philip Greenspun, a well known writer and MIT instructor on the development of community web sites, founded photo.net in the early 90's as a showcase for his own travel writing and photography. It has since developed into the largest general photography community on the web. According to Alexa, it is the second largest photography site (after dpreview) with over 2.7 million unique visitors per month, and more than 40 million page impressions per month. Philip still helps guide the site as a member of its Board of Directors, although he is no longer involved in day-to-day operations. From its inception, the site has aimed to be a "photography learning community", in which more experienced photographers, both avid amateurs and professional, provide mutual support, as well as being a resource for those interested in learning about photography. Since the site has been in existence since 1995, it is common to find contributors on the site who are now experts but who first visited the site years ago to ask beginner questions. The most prominent sections of the site are forums and galleries featuring member-contributed photos and writing. Volunteer moderators and editors are responsible for most of this content. (See their Masthead.) The site also hosts active sections for classified ads, and a "Neighbor" section with member ratings and feedback on photography retailers and processing labs. The "ezShop" section features member-contributed equipment reviews and comparative shopping, with offers from photography retailers who sponsor photo.net. Almost all the content on the site can be commented upon by members, and the comments become a significant part of the content. There are over 3300 edited articles and reviews on photography equipment, technique, and travel in the "Equipment", "Learn", and "Travel" sections, with new articles being added steadily. KSJ Tracker
http://ksjtracker.mit.edu/

KSJ Tracker is a new service for science journalists, created and funded by the Knight Science Journalism Fellowship Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. They believe that if science reporters and editors have convenient and timely access to the work of peers across the country, they can better evaluate and improve their own performance. Their goal is to provide a broad sampling of the past day’s science news and, where possible, of news releases or other news tips related to publication of science news in the general circulation news media, mainly of the U.S. Their goal is to have a new batch of posts up each day by 1 pm Eastern time.
KSJ Tracker ordinarily includes brief descriptions of news stories with occasional commentary, headlines and links to their publishers’ Web sites—some of which require registration to gain access. Priority goes to stories that report or analyze new scientific research, and to reports on science policy and issues. Less attention is given to brief reports and updates that add little to what has already been in the news. Bio Mapping
http://biomapping.net/

Bio Mapping is a research project which explores new ways that we as individuals can make use of the information we can gather about our own bodies. Instead of security technologies that are designed to control our behaviour, this project envisages new tools that allows people to selectively share and interpret their own bio data. The Bio Mapping tool allows the wearer to record their Galvanic Skin Response (GSR), which is a simple indicator of emotional arousal in conjunction with their geographical location. This can be used to plot a map that highlights point of high and low arousal. By sharing this data we can construct maps that visualise where we as a community feel stressed and excited. mnemomap - Search Engine
http://www.mnemo.org/

mnemomap is a new way to search the internet. It combines technologies of social networking, search engines and other data sources to help you formulate search queries and find really relevant information. Today’s search engines have some common flaws: Though easy to use, they hardly deliver any concept to assist the user in finding relevant information. They are somewhat straight-forward: give a word, get a list. mnemomap can do better: in an interactive way they help the user to refine search queries by providing alternative or additional search parameters on-the-fly. By providing tags, translations and many other data sources to find words they help formulating a search query that delivers better results. And finally: they show live search results. You won’t have to wonder whether you’re using the right words in queries. The live feedback enables you to see it realtime! Standpedia
http://www.standpedia.com/

Standpedia is wiki-style encyclopedia of controversy. It's a place where tough questions are answered from a variety of perspectives, instead of a single 'neutral point of view'. Standpedia users work together to build maps of controversial issues that everyone can agree on -- not because the map offers one right answer but because all the perspectives are well-represented within the map. Standpedia is part of Standpoint, an on-going online experiment in social belief management. This has been aded to Social Informatics Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.
