FILExt - Database of File Extensions
http://filext.com/

FILExt is a database of file extensions and the various programs that use them. If you know the file extension you want to learn about simply enter it into the search box on the left and click on the Search button. If it's in any of the FILExt databases the data we have on that file extension will be shown on a results page. If it's not in any of the databases you will be given a link to a page with hints on how to do further research. Don't search on terms; just file extensions and only one at a time please. There will be another search box on the results page if you have multiple searches to do. It's possible that the search will give you multiple results as there is no central registry for file extensions. If so, you will have some detective work to do; read the results page carefully as there will be hints on how to do this detective work. Journal of Genetics

Journal of Genetics
http://www.ias.ac.in/jgenet/

The Journal of Genetics is the oldest English language journal in genetics and was founded by W. Bateson and R. C. Punnett in 1910, and later edited by J. B. S. Haldane. When Haldane and his wife, Helen Spurway, emigrated to India in 1957, they brought the journal with them. Haldane edited the journal from India until his death in 1964, after which Helen Spurway continued to publish the journal with Madhav Gadgil and H. Sharat Chandra (Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore) and Suresh Jayakar (Laboratorio de Genetica Biochimica ed Evoluzionistica, Pavia) as editors. Upon Helen Spurway's death in 1977, the journal ceased publication for several years (the last issue published by her was Vol. 63 No. 2 of December 1977). In 1985, the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, resumed publication of the journal with the permission of Lady Naomi Mitchison, Haldane's sister and heir to the Haldane estate. The first issue published by the Indian Academy of Sciences was Vol. 64. No. 1 of July 1985. Since then, the journal continues to be published by the Indian Academy of Sciences as three issues each year (in April, August and December), forming one volume. The journal retains its traditional interest in evolutionary research that is of relevance to geneticists, even if not explicitly genetic in nature. Journal of Genetics covers all areas of genetics and evolution, but a contribution must have one of these subjects as its focus and be of interest to geneticists for acceptability. We publish original research papers, review articles, commentaries on papers recently published elsewhere, as well as essays of a more general nature on ideas and trends in genetics and evolutionary biology. In each issue (starting April 2004), we also publish one 'classic' paper from the Journal of Genetics archives, accompanied by a commentary placing the paper in modern context. Personal Learning Environments

Personal Learning Envionments
http://octette.cs.man.ac.uk/jitt/index.php/Personal_Learning_Environments

Personal Learning Envionments are systems that help learners take control of and manage their own learning. This includes providing support for learners to a) set their own learning goals, b) manage their learning; managing both content and process, and c) communicate with others in the process of learning; and thereby achieve learning goals. There are many dimensions to a space of PLEs. One basic distinction is between those visions , or incarnations, of PLEs as pure Web 2.0 artefacts, and those running on local hardware, be that anything from a laptop to a handheld. In the latter incarnation a further distinction is between those PLEs connected to the web, and those operating offline, perhaps in a field environment or a wi-fi free hospital. Off-line usage without connecting back to the web would be possible, but would be an incredibly impovrishing use, since the common conception of a PLE is that it is to be used in pedagogic contexts that acknowledge (or even emphasise) the role of communication in learning.

Environmental Bioindicators
http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/titles/15555275.asp

Environmental Bioindicators will seek to explore the scientific bases and uses of bioindicators and biomarkers of environmental stressors as they relate directly to specific measurable effects in ecological (both floral and faunal) and human populations. Emphasis is placed on the application of these indicators as tools to help in understanding the probability that the presence of a stressor in the ambient environment may produce an adverse effect in exposed receptors or populations, the degree of harm that may be indicated, and the integration of these data to characterize environmental health. Inherent in this approach is the objective of providing an empirically-derived foundation to help define environmental health and requisite protection, management or restoration needs, and from which responsible action, including informed and cost-effective regulatory endpoints, can be developed. Environmental Bioindicators (EB) is primarily devoted to the publication of reports of significant developments in all aspects of plant or animal indicators of environmental health, including molecular to community and
landscape level investigations. The Editorial Board particularly encourages manuscripts that relate the scientific bases and uses of bioindicators and biomarkers as they relate directly to specific measurable effects in ecological and human populations. Spatial Economic Analysis
http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/titles/17421772.asp

Spatial Economic Analysis is an international economics journal aiming for the highest level of quality and esteem. It is based at the University of Cambridge and is published by two of the world's leading learned societies in the analysis of spatial economics, the Regional Studies Association and the British and Irish Section of the Regional Science Association. A spatial perspective has become increasing relevant to our understanding of economic phenomena, both on the global scale and at the scale of cities and regions. The growth in international trade, the opening up of emerging markets, the restructuring of the world economy along regional lines, and overall strategic and political significance of globalization, have re-emphasised the importance of geographical analysis. Spatial variations in economic development within cities and regions are also highly topical subjects for intellectual enquiry and have long been the focus of policy initiatives by national, regional and local governments. The awakening emphasis on space among economists has been stimulated by the emergence of a new breed of theory, namely Enew economic geography or Egeographical economics. This new theory adds a significant new dimension to the already existing theoretical tools of spatial economics, which broadly aim to analyse the role of geography and location in economic phenomenon. Additionally, spatial economic analysis is increasingly being supported by the emergence of new analytical methods, with a) An explosion of interest in new models and techniques of spatial data analysis and data visualisation (GIS), and b) Spatial econometrics becoming increasingly recognised as a valuable sub-discipline among mainstream econometricians.

Php On Trax - Rapid Application Development Made Easy
http://www.phpontrax.com/

Php On Trax (formerly Php On Rails) is a web-application and persistance framework that is based on Ruby on Rails and includes everything needed to create database-backed web-applications according to the Model-View-Control pattern of separation. This pattern splits the view (also called the presentation) into "dumb" templates that are primarily responsible for inserting pre-build data in between HTML tags. The model contains the "smart" domain objects (such as Account, Product, Person, Post) that holds all the business logic and knows how to persist themselves to a database. The controller handles the incoming requests (such as Save New Account, Update Product, Show Post) by manipulating the model and directing data to the view. In Trax, the model is handled by what's called a object-relational mapping layer entitled Active Record. This layer allows you to present the data from database rows as objects and embellish these data objects with business logic methods. Social Neuroscience will feature original articles that examine how the brain mediates social cognition, interpersonal exchanges, affective/cognitive group interactions, and related topics that deal with social/personality psychology. The goal of the journal will be to provide a place to publish articles that intend to further our understanding of the role of the central nervous system in the development and maintenance of social behaviors. Submissions from all branches of neuroscience will be encouraged, including (but not limited to) bio/neuropsychology, evolution, psychiatry, neurology, and neuroscience. Further, submissions that have brain-based empirical data in the fields of social and cognitive psychology, including social cognitive neuroscience, philosophy, or other humanities areas are encouraged. Articles published in Social Neuroscience will cover all neuroscience techniques including neuroimaging methods (e.g., fMRI, PET, ERP, TMS), as well as more traditional neuroscience techniques (e.g., animal studies, case studies, psychiatric populations, post-mortem studies, pharmaceutical, agonist /antagonist). The journal will focus on both molar (i.e., regional cortical localization, neural networks) and molecular (i.e., neurotransmitter) research. All social behaviors will be covered including all aspects of inter- and intra-personal relationships. Both environmental and genetic influences will be presented. Abnormal behaviors and populations will be focused on in terms of understanding social/brain relationships. Language, memory, attention and perception will be appropriate topics if they relate to specific social behaviors or cognitions. Studies that approach social euroscience from an environmental or genetic approach will be equally appropriate, and related topics that deal with the interface of neuroscientific and social/personality investigations. Emerging Markets Review
http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/journal/15660141

The need for tools to address the many challenges posed by emerging markets has been growing faster than academic research has provided. In many areas, the invention of novel tools has shifted increasingly from academics to practitioners themselves. This trend invites renewed exchange between practitioners and scholars, all of whom look for critical thinking about the important issues in emerging markets, and for tools that help them understand and solve the many problems they face in these markets. The EMR aims to respond to these needs. EMR articles must analyze formally macro, micro, financial, institutional or other data from emerging markets, and should also provide tools or reach conclusions that are useful to practitioners. The EMR welcomes articles from all disciplines that relate to emerging markets such as finance, economics, political economy, industrial organization, law and economics, and institutional economics. Areas of coverage range from topics as diverse as investment strategies, corporate finance, exchange rate policies, regulatory frameworks, institutional designs, project finance, privatizations, and the role of the legal system and the courts, among others. In essence, the EMR seeks to attract high quality, well-defined, and useful research on emerging markets from both scholars and practitioners. Landmarks for Schools
http://landmark-project.com/index.php

As popular as it has become in recent years, the Internet is still a vast wilderness. For this reason, it still takes the explorer in us to seek out those net-based gems that can bring life to our learning environments. Most educators, however, have little time to go exploring on the Net, as much as they would like to. To serve these professionals, David Warlick and The Landmark Project have utilized 20 years of experience inventing instructional applications of computer and communication technologies for teaching and learning. Landmarks for Schools (LFS) serves as a hub for these and other resources available to teachers to help them prepare students for the 21st century. Since its 1995 debut, when Landmarks... was one of only a dozen or so education websites on the Internet, the global network has matured with practically countless resources serving as junction points for teachers and students. The September 1998 update of Landmarks for Schools repurposed LFS, focusing on a special theme for which no other Web sites are explicitly addressing. Landmarks for Schools now provides links to information building blocks: Web sites, pages, and interactive tools that provide information in the form of a raw material. The information and data that Landmarks... points to can be imported into other information processing tools and used in the meaningful construction of unique and valuable information products, within the context of social studies, science, mathematics, and other disciplines. The creation of a so-called “common market” and throughout the European countries has taken decades, and this valuable scholarly resource created by a team of academics will be of great interest to anyone with a penchant for this subject. The idea for this archive of European Integration was devised by Phil Wilkin (who now serves as its editor), and over the years, his efforts have been aided by a team of other dedicated individuals. Simply put, the Archive of European Integration (AEI) is “an electronic repository and archive for research materials on the topic of European integration and unification.” As such, it is primarily concerned with collecting official European Community/European Union documents and certain independently-produced research materials. First-time visitors to the site can search the archive by six different methods, view a list of the latest additions, and also register at no charge for an account that will let them submit items to the archive. All told, the archive currently contains over 4800 documents ranging from working papers on topics such as the common agricultural policy as well as cultural policy. Computational and Applied Mathematics
http://www.scielo.br/scielo.php/script_sci_serial/pid_0101-8205/lng_en/nrm_iso

Computational & Applied Mathematics began to be published in 1981 with the name Matematica Aplicada e Computacional. From the beginning, this journal represented the main scientific publication of SBMAC (Brazilian Society of Applied and Computational Mathematics). This society was founded in 1978. Initially, the journal published papers in Portuguese, English, French and Spanish. The publishing Editor was Editora Campos, and turned to be edited by Birkhauser in 1986. In 1998, due to the high costs of publication by Birkhauser, the Council of SBMAC decided to publish the journal en Brazil, causing a meaningful reduction of costs. However, this change provoked a temporary crisis. Birkhauser interpreted that the journal did not exist anymore, and, as a consequence, the indexation by ISI was temporary lost. In the present, we are in the process of getting this indexation again, since the Journal satisfies all the scientific requirements for it. Computational & Applied Mathematics is the natural corollary, in terms of scientific publication, to the growth of the community of Applied and Computational Mathematics in Brazil. This area is reasonably developed in the country which, at the present, exhibits many reasearchers with regular participation in the international scientific field with
consolidated reputtion. The objective of the journal is the publication of original research in Applied in Computational Mathematics, with interfaces in Physics, Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, Operations Research, Statistics, Social Sciences and Economy. The journal has the usual quality standards of scientific international journals and we aim high level of contributions in terms of originality, depth and relevance. CAM is currently reviewed in Mathematical Reviews.

TWOCrowds - The Wisdom of Crowds

TWOCrowds - The Wisdom of Crowds
http://www.twocrowds.com/

TWOCrowds is a social predicting website which aims to let us all find out if our collective predicting ability can approach something bordering expertise. Create an account here (they predict zero spam) and type in as many predictions as come to your mind and ask your friends to do the same. Once a certain number of predictions are out there, it is hoped that some interesting patterns or relationships might emerge. If you see a prediction that you agree with, you can easily copy it to your list of predictions. TWOCrowds is also a mashup. A mashup is a website or web service that attempts to use the web as a platform for development by using (or consuming) application programming interfaces over the internet. These APIs are exposed by companies such as Yahoo, Google, eBay, Flickr, Amazon etc. to their own data - examples include maps from Google, traffic from Yahoo, book reviews from Amazon and photos from Flickr. Whenever a user clicks on a predictions (her own or someone else's) the text of the prediction is first run by Yahoo's Content Analysis/Term Extraction API to get the relevant terms out of the text as well as by Yahoo's News Search API to get any relevant news articles. The relevant terms returned by the term extraction API are once again routed through Yahoo's Image Search API to get the relevant images associated with the terms. Finally, a quick AJAX update displays these relevant image and news articles next to the prediction. This has been added to Prediction Markets Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

Refactoring
http://www.refactoring.com/

Refactoring is a disciplined technique for restructuring an existing body of code, altering its internal structure without changing its external behavior. Its heart is a series of small behavior preserving transformations. Each transformation (called a 'refactoring') does little, but a sequence of transformations can produce a significant restructuring. Since each refactoring is small, it's less likely to go wrong. The system is also kept fully working after each small refactoring, reducing the chances that a system can get seriously broken during the restructuring. This site is a simple portal for information about refactoring. This has been added to Script Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

Power Technology and Engineering deals with all aspects of electrical power generation and distribution, with an emphasis on sustainable technologies and environmentally sensitive issues. Topics covered include construction and operation of hydroelectric and thermal power stations, non-traditional power generation, electrical lines and equipment, renewable sources of energy, and environmental issues. Power Technology and Engineering publishes articles selected from the Russian journals `Gidrotekhnicheskoe Stroitel'svo' (Hydrotechnical Construction) and `Elektricheskie Stantsii' (Electrical Power Stations). Articles are selected on the basis of their scientific and technical quality, their focus on the above themes, and the significance to a worldwide audience of this leading Russian research. Power Technology and Engineering is a continuation of the Kluwer/Consultants Bureau journal Hydrotechnical Construction, which was a translation of `Gidrotekhnicheskoe Stroitel'svo' exclusively. The change improves the scope of the journal and makes two valuable sources of Russian research available internationally. Each annual volume of Power Technology and Engineering will contain six issues. Volume 36 (2002) was published in July - December 2002, following completion of `Hydrotechnical Construction' Volume 35, which was published in a July to June year. From Volume 37 (2003) Power Technology and Engineering is published bimonthly on a calendar year (January to December) basis.

Created in 1991, the Office of Science Education (OSE) is a division of the National Institutes of Health that is primarily concerned with both encouraging science literacy in adults and children as well as attracting young people to biomedical and behavioral science careers. For educators and the curious public, the site is truly delightful, as it compiles its primary resources into topical areas, such as cell biology and bioethics. It also divides its materials into a list of resource formats, which include lesson plans, newsletters, and book covers. Additionally, visitors can search materials by the appropriate educational level, such as elementary or secondary. Along with this veritable treasure-trove of educational materials, there is the “Research Results for the Public” area. Here, visitors can read fact sheets that decipher some of the more complex medical research from highly technical language into a language that is both lucid and accessible.
